Why Floor Preparation Matters
Concrete preparation is essential because coatings require a surface that is perfectly clean, level, and textured for proper adhesion. Without the right prep work, coatings can peel, bubble, or fail prematurely. Our process ensures your concrete is not only ready for coating but also optimized for maximum strength and longevity.
Before we arrive, we simply ask that you clear the area of vehicles, furniture, or any items on the concrete surface. Once the space is ready, our crew gets to work.
Step 1: Grinding the Concrete Surface
We use professional-grade, diamond-bit grinders to open the pores of the concrete and remove any weak or deteriorated material. This creates the coarse, porous profile needed for our premium polyurea coatings to bond effectively. For corners, edges, and vertical surfaces, we switch to precision hand grinders to ensure no spot is overlooked.
Step 2: Containing Dust and Debris
Each grinder is paired with a high-powered vacuum system that captures the dust generated during grinding. This keeps your property clean, improves air quality during the process, and ensures the surface is free from debris before coating.
Step 3: Removing Contaminants
Concrete often absorbs oils, grease, and other contaminants over time. While grinding removes most surface buildup, deeper contaminants require special treatment. We apply professional-grade degreasers to lift stubborn stains and ensure optimal bonding. Our ArmorCoat coatings are also formulated to bond even if traces of oil remain.
Step 4: Eliminating the Latent Layer
When concrete cures, it forms a thin top layer called the latent layer—a dense, weak surface with few pores. This layer prevents coatings from penetrating properly, so we grind approximately 1/16 inch deep to completely remove it. Doing so exposes the stronger, more porous concrete beneath, ensuring a lasting bond.
